You’ve just been handed the keys to your new home and you are completely wrapped up in the excitement of the moment. It is understandable. Becoming a homeowner is a monumental event. In the midst of the excitement, however, it is important to not forget about one of the most important things about home ownership—home security.
As you back in the moving truck, here are a few tips you should consider about new homeowner home security:
Make sure the Property is Unattractive to Burglars
One of the first things you should do in your new home is making sure that the property is unattractive to burglars. Install outside lighting at the perimeter of the property, motion activated lighting closer to the home structure, and remove shrubbery that obscures windows. Consider having a CCTV system installed so you can view the property from inside or remotely.
Change the Locks
Unless the home is a new home, you have no idea how many people have copies of keys that provide access to your home. Have the locks changed immediately, prior to spending your first night in the home.
Install a Security Alarm System
Have a home security system installed as soon as possible once you buy your home. A home security alarm system is one of the best ways to keep burglars away.
Install a Peep Hole
If you have a new home, the front door may be a stock product and come without a peep home. Have one installed as soon as possible so you can always check on anyone that comes to the door.
Join or Start a Neighborhood Watch Program
Get to know your neighbors and form a neighborhood watch program so that there is a collective eye on the community. Talk to the local police department about tips and training for spotting crime before it happens.
Follow Crime Reports
Get informed about crime in the area. Know how to protect yourself, family, and property.
